Protecting Credit and Debit Cards

What is the sensitive information on a credit or debit card?  In short, every element on the card must be kept safe, and used only for the purposes of payments.

Credit card data includes the following:

  • The full cardholder number, called the PAN or Primary Account Number
  • The security code or cardholder verification value (CVV)
  • Data from the magnetic stripe on the back of the card
  • Data from the chip embedded in the card
  • Any PIN data

How can you keep this information safe?

  • Never retain the security code from the back of the card.
  • Do not write the PIN on the card or maintain the PIN in any way.
  • Avoid sending or receiving card information via email. If you must send this information via email, the data must be encrypted.
